Massimiliano Antonio "Max" Cavalera (Portuguese pronunciation:[masimiliˈɐnuɐ̃ˈtonjukɐvɐˈleɾɐ]; born 4 August 1969) is a Brazilian musician. He co-founded the heavy metal band Sepultura in 1984 with his brother Igor Cavalera, and was the band's lead singer and rhythm guitarist until his departure in 1996. He currently plays in the heavy metal bands Soulfly, Cavalera Conspiracy, Killer Be Killed and Go Ahead and Die. Cavalera was also involved in a short-lived side project called Nailbomb.[2]
Career and influences
[edit]Max Cavalera's father, Graziano Cavalera, was an employee of the Italian Consulate in Belo Horizonte. He died at 41 years of age, when Max was nine years old. Cavalera's family was in a state of financial crisis and family turbulence when he formed Sepultura with his younger brother Igor, in the bohemian neighborhood of Santa Tereza in Belo Horizonte. He moved to São Paulo in 1989 together with the other members of the band, and shared an apartment in Santa Cecília (district of São Paulo). In 1992, he relocated to Phoenix, Arizona. I’ve had a terrific time thus far reconnecting with my prior world in horror and music journalism, first with a rad assignment from Rue Morgue magazine, then hired to write a musician press release this past week, which was a new domain for me, even with all the work I did in the industry. I interviewed Max three times in my music journalism career and will never forget the first time Gloria met me beforehand and introduced me to the man himself in the back of the tour bus.
I was as impressed with her on the spot as I was in awe of Max, just the humblest dude for all he’s achieved and been through. Later in life, Gloria had me come down for Max and Iggor Cavalera’s gig in 2017 playing Sepultura’s game-changing Roots album in its entirety.
