Hollywood Dreaming: Stories, Pictures, and Poems
I probably shouldn't fault this book for being what it is. And it's also likely again (as with all my reviews) more of a commentary on myself than the book, but I'd say that maybe this would have struck me as more interesting and innovative if I hadn't had, say, been reading things that kind of do the same cross-genre, blurry-bio-fictionalizations for, well, decades now. After about halfway through this I starting thinking, I have better things to do. He's not offending me, he's occasionally clever, etc. But I also thought, well, frankly I can get a lot more enjoyment out of just watching him do a kind of playful Franco-schtick in a movie, and in terms of literary accomplishment this wasn't reminding me of anything I hadn't already seen. I wonder what I would have thought of this if I'd encountered it at 18? Daring innovation? Confusion? I'm not sure. Right now it didn't strike me as what would be future-memorable, however. (isn't that a condemnation, huh, in the future I won't look back on you). "Well I'm takin' my time, I'm just movin' along, you'll forget about me after I've been gone..." - Boston
