One familiar with the Arabic publishing world knows that editions of texts can vary considerably in their accuracy and quality. See here:
One thus needs to know the best available edition of each text. As a rule, one generally avoids commercial publishers such as Dar al-Kutub al-Ilmiyah (DKI), Dar al-Fikr, and Dar Ihya Turath al-Arab unless they have the only edition available. The best publishers are generally (in no order and with the caveat that each book depends on the editor more than the publisher, with good publishers having bad editions sometimes):
- Muassasah al-Risalah, aka al-Risalah, and its offshoots: al-Risalah al-Alamiyyah and Muassasah al-Risalah Nashirun (all based in Damascus) with the former somewhat a direct successor with the same core research team led by shaykh Shuayb al-Arnaut and the latter more commercially focused with less voluminous works
- Dar Ibn al-Jawzi (Riyadh)
- Dar al-Minhaj (Jeddah)
- Dar Alam al-Kutub (Riyadh)
- Dar Ibn Hazm (Beirut)
- Dar al-Bashair al-Islamiyyah (Beirut)
- Dar al-Gharb al-Islami (Tunis)
- Dar al-Hadith (Cairo)
- Dar al-Diya (Kuwait)
- Dar al-Tasil (Cairo)
- Dar al-Nafais (Amman)
