    The Court of Appeal of Turks and Caicos Islands ruled that mandatory jail sentences must be imposed for firearm offenses, including for tourists. The judges found that 5 cases over 2 years where individuals received only fines for unlawful firearm possession were "wrong in principle" and unlawful, as deterrence requires a custodial sentence. Going forward, the courts have no jurisdiction to impose non-custodial sentences for these offenses, even if exceptional circumstances are found. The ruling aims to send a strong message of deterrence.
